I am a Christian minister, a socialist and a former member of the House of Representatives from the State of South Dakota. I am the host of the SHARON GOSPEL HOUR aired throughout the Caribbean and heard for many years over GBS-Guyana. We lived in Antigua for many years. My wife is a Trinidadian. One of our children was born in Dominica, another in Antigua and the other in Canada. We are a truly international family. I remember, as an adolescent living in Wakenaam in the 1960's, the many public meetings which were addressed by the FATHER of the nation, with his right hand pointing in the air and the microphone in his left hand, under the light of the petromax gas lamps, HE confidently predicted,'South Africa will be free,Zimbabwe will be free''. I recently visited your location and was quite impressed of all collections for our great hero. A suitable environment to inspire anyone who has the ego to achieve good leadership skills. I don't think we have anyone in Guyana and in the Carribbean to match the works of Cheddie Jagan.

His heroism in the face of tremendous odds and his obvious honesty and sincerity in his fight for Guyana's freedom are traits which we should all want to emulate in our own lives. There are so many things i remembered as a young man growing up in the era of premier Dr C Jagan. We had a beautiful country a system that was not too perfect but we had love for each other, regardless of our race colour or creed. I will never forget the sacrifices and struggle that Dr Jagan had to face and yet his people , the guyanese people turn against him. They were too blind to see so far ahead in the future and fail to see the beautiful guyana he had in his plan. I was lucky to know and associate with a great man by the name Dr.Cheddi Jagan D.D.S. He used to stay at our home in Hampton Court Essequibo Coast during his days in opposition. I admire him for his gently smile and hug he used to give me. He inspired me to study Dentistry. I am now a Dentex. His life and works will live in me and our family forever. He had loved fruits and my mom would send me around the village to purchase all different kinds of fruit for Cde.Cheddi as he was popularly called. I visited Guyana as a young exchange participant some 25 years ago, and at that time I purchased a copy of Cheddi Jagan's "The West on Trial," but I never read the book. Nowadays I teach political philosophy, and recently I have been thinking about Frantz Fanon's incredible book, "The Wretched of the Earth," which carried my mind back to the few things I had picked up over the years about Guyana's struggles against colonialism. I decided to find my copy of "The West on Trial" and read it. I am now more than halfway through it, and I have to say I am impressed. Cheddi Jagan writes very clearly and factually, without rhetoric or flourish, letting his presentation of the record speak for itself; in so doing, the events of his life and the events of the nation come alive, bringing the reader to the very heart of Guyana and its struggles. One can only admire Jagan's apparent calm resolve and determination - in the face of so many incredible obstacles - to work for the betterment of the Guyanese people. Thanks for the website. I greatly appreciate reading your site with its many links. My interest was sparked by viewing the film Thunder in Guyana, on PBS. I knew that Cheddi Jagan was a great man who had struggled to win the independence of his nation and had seen many of his hopes for his nation dashed by the British and later by CIA's covert operations. I had been thrilled when he was finally elected in '92 and hoped that his election would finally bring to life some of the promise of Guyana. I remember being shocked to hear of his death a few years later and thinking that it was sad that he had just not had enough time to fulfill all the promise that had been represented by his election. The news here in the US seldom covers Guyana so I had only been dimly aware of subsequent events. It was wonderful to watch the independent film Thunder in Guyana to see the story of Janet Jagan and her role along with that of her husband in creating an independent Guyana. I had the good fortune,in the mid sixties, of bumping into this giant of a man. As a yougster in those days, little boys were meant to be seen and not heard from thus I followed the crowds quietly just waiting to hear him speak. He played his part well and Im sure he was a superb Dad and Husband.....I can still hear him say "we need men and women with "backbone" and "intestinal fortitude to be able to withstand the opposing forces and to forge ahead with the vision of the PPP.... I like to know about Guyana`s politcal past and Dr. Cheddie's history is the best to be reviewed. And, I like to know about 1930-1945, I'm kinda obsessed about that era, so I read anything that I come across about the the Great Depression and the war, his veiws about poverty during those times. And it is very intresting to know about how Cheddie and Janet strugled with the P.P.P/C through British rule, P.N.C's dictatorship and the blind eye America seemed to play for a while & America's mistaken thrust of the P.N.C. Hi Nadira,

Thank you for having the wisdom to maintain a web site in honor of one of the most significant people of the modern age. Cheddi, his wife, his family, his friends, and the supporters he inspired are truly heroic, visionary people who lived remarkable lives that exemplify what it means to be fully human.

Nadira, it is amazing how Cheddi's presence got through the morass of post-war hysteria. In those years, I lived in a suburb of Washington, DC and if you believed the "news", you would have thought that Cheddi was the most powerful man
in the world because his name was in every world news report. The reporters never took time to explain what was happening in your country or even to give a full profile of Mr. Jagan. It was only distorted nonsense report after report of Cheddi Jagan this and Cheddi Jagan that. Having only network news media to inform them, Americans could not possibly understand anything coherent about what life in Cheddi's world was all about. But even a child like me knew that there was someone named Cheddi Jagan that was "doing things."

It is a tribute to his wisdom that in the middle of such startling ignorance, Cheddi Jagan stood up and lived a life devoted to positive and productive change for people who were supposed to be "worth less." His wife is equally astonishing - gosh, the world was so admirably graced by those two souls.

Nadira, it is our turn now. I just want you to know that there is one more Black person who rejects racial madness and embraces humanism. We certainly need social and economic change, but to do so, people have to recover from hate,
denounce hate, and live in a way that accepts and appreciates diversity of opinion and culture. Realizing the Oneness of humanity is the first step...living as one is the necessary thing that gives quality to all that we intend and to all that we accomplish. We just need to cooperate and we will get satisfying results.

Hate is the true enemy of humankind. It is the destructive monster that prevents us from realizing the goals of peace and prosperity that we strive for. I know I am saying stuff that you already know. I just want you to know that your ideas are
still as significant and worthwhile as when you first had the courage to accept them.

Thank you for giving the world an opportunity to consider something important.

Great website , heres my bit for the Man: CHEDDI JAGAN  Born in Port Mourant on a sugar plantation He daily witnessed Guyana's exploitation He saw hardship and knew there was only one cure And Cheddi promised to fight oppression for sure He fought against the plantation owners Championing the cause of the sugar-workers The gov't. of the day could not understand For he was a force, a tiger in their hand In those days Imperialism was in And Social Social/Marxism was a sin You bow to Uncle Sam and dance to his tune Or you'd pass away like the last full moon The people came last and politics came first But this jingoism didn’t quench his thirst He stood up and was counted though he was alone In Moscow, his friends had problems of their own Guyanese celebrated raising the Indian jhanda As he watched, admired and even visited India When in 1947 India became independent To Nehru and Ghandi good wishes he sent Then later Ghana got independence too And all Guyanese dressed in every hue Joined with their brothers of Ghana And celebrated with Kwame Nkrumah This did not deter him, he stuck to his belief And was forced to be the opposition to a thief As bullets replaced ballots in every succession As Guyana was repeatedly raped in every election All his pleas fell on deaf ears Especially to the political seers He went to the United Nation and lamented But the US backed body was undaunted The British changed first past the post To prevent the PPP from getting the most They did this with the sole devious intention By switching to proportional representation The result was no party got a majority The British way of getting rid of the PPP Burnham and D’Aguiar formed a coalition Making way for Burnham’s Guyanization The registration by the Shoup Company Made utter sheer mockery of democracy Padded with the dead, hanged, even the fictitious Which the same British press called "ridiculous" In England the press had a field day When Granada TV did their expose` Airing '”The Trails of the Vanishing Voter” And "The Making of a Prime Minister" The whole West knew of that widespread scam But they prefer to put their money on Burnham The Indians overseas were denied their right The wholesale rigging was too much to fight Rubber bands played a big roll in elections They were used in the PNC stronghold sections To wrap bundles of votes i.e. the PNC’s share And ballot boxes were tampered without fear Desmond Hoyt, the architect on the commission He became President with Burnham's extinction Since 1992 there was never a fair and free election Only fear, fraud, disgust and wholesale corruption That was the foundation of the PNC Gov’t. abuse What do you expect such garbage would produce? For 28 years they ruled with an iron fist And did every bleddy thing wrong on the list Cheddi Jagan did all he humanly could But it was if he was preaching to wood They rebuked him and after 28 years The good doctor still showed he cares Like the others who crossed the floor in stealth He could have partook in the country's wealth Call it quits and left like the others But he stuck to his guns and his brothers But behind every great man There is always a good woman And we can't and should never forget His strong and faithful wife Janet Like Nehru and Ghandi of India He also had big dreams for Guyana But his reign was aborted by a conspiracy of silence Though like Rev. JAGAN, GANDHI, NEHRU AND GOD
During the fight for India’s independence, Gandhi and Nehru said these words: Gandhi said:

(1)   The English `have taken away our money from year to year. The most important posts are reserved for them. We are kept in a state of slavery. They behave insolently towards us and disregard our feelings.

(2) Formerly men worked in the open air as much as they liked. Now thousands of work men meet together and for the sake of maintenance, they work in factories and mines for the millionaires. Their condition is worse than that of the beast.

(3) Women who should be queen of the household are working in the streets or slave away in factories.

(4) I have no objection in you (the English) remaining in my country; but although you are the ruler you will have to remain as servants of the people. It is not we who have to do as you wish but it is you who has to do as we wish. You may keep the riches that you have drained from this land but you may not drain riches henceforth.

Nehru said:

(1) Socialism is an alternative to imperialist exploitation. Capitalism leads to the exploitation of one man by another, one group by another and one country by another. In order to secure mass support for the struggle for independence we must clearly lay down an economic program for the mass with socialism as its ideal.

(2)   For whatever is the fault of communism, it is at least not hypocritical and not imperialist.

Gandhi was called the Mahatma (the great soul) and Nehru was called the freedom fighter.

Rabindranauth Tagore said this about Nehru: “A solider whose banner is the banner of the exploited and a patriot whose humanity and vision are not obstructed by the barrier of the land and its past and has offered India two gifts, the gift to live bravely and the gift to think intelligently”

In Guyana although Dr. Jagan’s vision and thinking were the same as Gandhi’s and Nehru’s, he was called a communist, an atheist and a racist, and he and his wife were labeled the nastiest things that one could find in the dictionary.

Were these two people all that bad?

According to the Aquarian gospel, Jesus astonished his teachers with his clever and profound answer and incurred the anger of the Brahmans by his open criticism.

Unlike Jesus who had to run out of India, Jagan, Gandhi and Nehru were sent to jail because they angered the British.

Jesus said in the Bible that it is not by shouting “Lord, Lord” that one shall enter the kingdom of heaven but that it is by one’s deeds and actions that one shall do so. In the Gita, Lord Krishna said that when you serve humanity you serve me.

Dr. Jagan and his wife throughout their lives stood side by side with the Guyanese people. They helped them to fight for their freedom, independence, civil liberties and democracy without thinking of themselves. They were never tired of fighting for this just cause.

Gandhi said that if you are tired it only betrays your impatience. Bishma said in the Mahabharata that wealth generated must only be used for the good of mankind. The Bible said that the love of money is evil.

Dr. Jagan never strived for personal wealth. He never had a foreign bank account like some leaders. He was offered millions to stop fighting for the poor and he refused it. He was a simple man and he loved the simple things in life and the people. The money that the country generated and the money that he borrowed were used for the development of the people. There is no other leader and party in this world that I know of that has done as much for its people in such a short time and with so little money.

One journalist told Dr. Jagan that he doesn’t know of any other leader in the world who takes his lunch with him to work.

Mrs. Jagan stood tall as a wife to Dr. Jagan.

In the Ramayana it is stated that a mother, father and brother bestow only limited joy. A husband, however, bestows unlimited joy.

Vile is the woman who refuses to serve her husband. A woman who treats her husband with disrespect even though he is old, sick, dull headed, blind, deaf, wrathful, or most wretched, shall suffer various torments in hell. A devotion of body, speech and mind to her Lord’s (husband) feet is the only duty, sacred vow and penance of a woman.

Mrs. Jagan, after her marriage, never thought at anytime of going back to her parents in the USA. When her father was sick, the British did not allow her to go to see him. She went after her father had died.

Like mother Sati in the Ramayana, Mrs. Jagan stood next to her husband in the good and bad times. Mother Sati spends fourteen years in the wilderness with her husband while Mrs. Jagan spends twenty eight years out of the government with her husband. Although they knew that their lives were not safe they continued to fight for the people. Like Lord Rama whom people loved to see and who was the people’s only hope although he was not the king, Dr. Jagan was flocked by people whenever he went anywhere. They loved to hear him speak, and he was their only hope.

Mrs.Jagan treated her husband with all respect and even though he is dead she still carries the torch for her husband. She did not leave her husband’s work to be with his son whose ideas are different from theirs.

Now even after his death we see the members of ROAR are trying to discredit Mrs.Jagan. Their new book is making Rai the hero and Dr. Jagan the villain.

In the Gita it is said that the intellect is determined and directed towards one ideal where as the intellect of the undecided wonders in all directions after innumerable aims.

They claim that Dr. Jagan did not know about the Indian culture.

I wonder how many Indians at that time and even now know anything about the Indian culture. I would be glad if one of them could tell us about Indian culture.

Let us agree that Dr. Jagan did not know about Indian culture.

Was culture the issue?

No.

The Guyanese people did not have a cultural problem but a bread and butter problem. Their lives were that of semi slavery. The money that most people worked for was not enough to feed their families. Most families’ lived in a one bedroom house, so there was no privacy. These are just a few of the problems.

Hanuman Prasad of India said that “it is the impurities of your own mind that is mainly responsible for brining to your notice only the dark side of others. Make your own mind faultless and you will find that the numbers of sinners in this world is very much reduced.”
